The Board of Commissioners of the City of Anthony, Kansas met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. with Acting Mayor David Williams presiding and the following Commissioners present: Hekel, Dickey and Hammersmith. Absent: Mayor Hatfield. Also present were Grant K. Sechler, Jr., City Superintendent; John Blevins, Chief of Police; Jennifer Fox of the Anthony Republican; Derrick Keim of Videomax and Sherri Miller.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
APPROPRIATION ORDINANCE AND 02/19 CITY PAYROLL APPROVED
Claim Ordinance #5527 making appropriation for $36,977.62 and 02/19 Payroll for $43,960.05 for the payments of certain claims against the City of Anthony for appropriation ordinance and pay ordinance were presented and on a motion by Commissioner Williams, seconded by Commissioner Dickey, said ordinance and payroll were unanimously approved and claims ordered paid.
REDBOX CONCERN/DERRICK KEIM-VIDEOMAX
Derrick Keim, Videomax owner was present to discuss his concerns about the Redbox Video Rental that was installed at McDonalds. His concern relates to easy access to ‘R’ rated movies with out parental consent. Mr. Keim would like the City Commission to write a letter to McDonalds expressing their concern regarding the ‘R’ rated movies being rented without parental consent. It was suggested to contact the Kansas League of Municipalities to see options and a possible letter from them. The Commission agreed to draw up a letter of concern about renting ‘R’ rated movies and sign the letter next week when Mayor Hatfield and Don Heidrick are present. Copies will be sent to McDonalds, Mark Wright and Redbox. In the mean time, Mr. Keim will draw up a petition and have local residents sign and present to the Commission next week.
CITY SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT/ HARPER COUNTY FARM BUREAU ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD/ SUNRISE ADDITION PLUMBING/
WATER METER AT SUNRISE ADDITION/ MUNICIPAL HALL INSURANCE ADJUSTER/SEWER CAMERA/ FIRE STATION GUTTER/ 2007 REPORTS
City Superintendent Sechler reported that he was interviewed by Tim Clark last week concerning the Harper County Farm Bureau Environmental Award.
City Superintendent Sechler completed the plumbing inspections on three of the six duplexes at Sunrise Addition last week. Concrete should be poured this week for the floors.
The Water Department installed a 1 ½” water meter at Sunrise Addition last week.
Superintendent Sechler met with an Insurance Adjuster about the Municipal Hall water damage that occurred in November. He was from the insurance company that has the dishwasher which caused the overflow.
We are hoping to get information on the sewer camera. We have received information on a new portable unit that we could look at. It is more up to date.
Crews will be working on the valley gutter in front of the fire station addition. Hopefully we can get this concrete poured before more weather hits.
We are working on required 2007 Water and Electric reports.
CHIEF OF POLICE REPORT/ SCHOOL BOARD MEETING/
KS. INTELLIGENCE MEETING/ VALENTINE DANCE/ ARRESTS
Chief of Police Blevins reported that he attended the School Board Meeting to report activities by the Police Department at the Schools.
Chief Blevins attended a Kansas Intelligence Meeting held by the South Hutchinson Police Department.
Officers responded to a noise complaint at 400 S. Santa Fe and ended up with an arrest of one (1) adult for possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and unlawful consumption by a minor, and two (2) juveniles for possession of paraphernalia. Case has gone to County Attorney.
Officers responded to a disturbance and arrested two (2) for disorderly conduct in the 300 block of South Madison on Sunday.
BETTE BERRY RESIGNING
Bette Berry is resigning. She wants no fanfare. The Commission agreed to have cake on March 3 for Bette. She has been working for the City since 1981. She will be missed.
WAYNE DENNIS FUND COMMITTEE
The Wayne Dennis Fund Committee is overdue for two expired positions needing filled. The positions on the Committee cannot be reappointed according to Dennis Will. Don will need to check on the requirements for Board Members on the committee. The Commission agreed to have the Wayne Dennis Committee provide recommendations for appointment to the City Commission for the open positions.
Commissioner Hammersmith made the motion that the City Commission meeting be adjourned at 9:27 a.m. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Dickey. Motion carried.
